Applying for Social Housing in and around Ipswich
Gateway to Homechoice
If you are looking for affordable social housing there are several landlords in Ipswich.
Orwell Housing is one of the main providers . To achieve a tenancy with any of the
Social Housing Associations in and around Ipswich the first thing you must do is register
with Gateway to Home Choice.
To be applicable for Social Housing in Great Britain you must fulfil the criteria:
-You must be 16 years or over
-You must not be subject to immigration control
-You must pass the habitual residence test
-You and your household must be resident in the UK, the Channel Islands, the Isle of
Man or the Republic of Ireland
-You or your household must not be guilty of unacceptable behaviour which would
make you unsuitable to be a tenant
How to Apply
Either go to www.gatewaytohomechoice.org.uk and apply on line or visit your local
authority. and fill in an application form. Once submitted, the Local Authority may
contact you to supply further documentation or verification documents.
Once the Local Authority has fully assessed your application, they will write and tell you:
- your housing application reference number
- details of how to use the Gateway to Homechoice scheme
- your priority band
- your effective date
-your bedroom entitlement
Local Connection to the Area
Gateway to Homechoice holds a housing register that enables people within a region or
one of its sub regions to apply for social Housing.When bidding for properties it may be important that ;
-your current, only or principle home is within the boundaries of the district covered by the sub-region.
or
-you have been placed in specialised housing which is not available in the sub- region, but had a local
connection previously through residence.
or
-you (not a member of your household) are in permanent paid work in the sub region.
or
-you have a son, daughter, brother, sister, mother or father, who is over 18 and lives in the sub-region,
and has done so for at least five years before the date of application.
Choice Based Lettings
Gateway to Homechoice offers Choice Based Lettings. This means that in order to be
assessed for a propertyagainst all the other applicants, you need to show an interest, (or bid).
To see the properties available each week you will need to look on line or at your newsletter,
decide what is suitable and register an interest. You will receive full instructions of how to do this when you apply.
Prioritising Applications
Once your application has been assessed, you will be placed into one of five bands (Bands A - E), depending on your assessed level of housing need.
Allocation of Properties
A few days after you place your bid on a property the successful candidate will be
selected. The successful candidate will be the family or person with the greatest need
for that property. If you are successful, you will be contacted by the relevant Housing Association.
